Show Notes

When we try to amp ourselves up and get ourselves motivated to achieve our goals, sometimes we'll lean on our favorite inspirational quote. This has been true for me, at least, for a good portion of my life.

In this episode, I share some inspirational quotes and mantras that once upon a time I found to be inspiring, but... in hearing them now, I realize that in some ways, they're really quite toxic or don't support a healthy mindset when it comes to health, wellness, fitness, weight loss, and lifestyle.

These quotes include:

  • Hurt so good. (Yes, like the song... but from the perspective of muscle soreness)
  • I'll sleep when I'm dead.
  • Northing tastes as good as being fit feels.
  • What's your excuse? / Excuses don't burn calories.
  • Train insane or remain the same.
  • Embrace the suck.
  • I just woke up one day and decided I don't want to feel like that. So I changed.
  • The best ab exercise is five sets of stop eating so much crap.

In this badass space, I want to make sure that while it's good to acknowledge the negative, it's also important to find balance. For the sake of balance, here are some more productive thoughts and quotes:

  • Sometimes the things we can't change end up changing us.
  • Strength doesn't come from what you can do; it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't. (This was cut from the actual podcast episode, but I still like it and wanted to include it here for you!)
  • Giving up on your goal because of a setback is like slashing the other three tires because you got a flat.
  • Strive for progress, not perfection.
  • I feel prettiest when I sweat. (Can you relate?)
  • There is no one giant step that does it. It's a lot of little steps.

If any of the toxic/shitty inspirational quotes are really helpful - awesome! You do you. In the podcast episode, I go into more detail about why I think the toxic quotes are shitty, but your perspective may be different and that's totally fine.
